Nokia has filed lawsuits against Apple for infringing 32 patents. The iPhone maker is being accused of violating patents for software, chipsets, displays, user interfaces and more.
Ilkka Rahnasto, Nokia’s head of patent business has stated that the company will now defend its rights. They have been negotiating with Apple regarding the use of patents for years but it appears like the two parties have not made any agreement.
Through research and development, Nokia has “contributed to many of the fundamental technologies used in today’s mobile devices.” According to the company, Apple used its inventions without properly licensing them.
The tech giant has already addressed the issue by filing a case against Acacia Research Corp and Conversant Intellectual Property Management Inc. The company believes that the two organisations including Nokia are working together to extract revenues.
Apple denies the allegations stating it has never been neglectful when it comes to properly licensing technology. The iPhone maker thinks that the lawsuit is Nokia’s strategy to extort money.
“We’ve always been willing to pay a fair price to secure the rights of patents covering technology in our products. Unfortunately, Nokia has refused to license their patents on a fair basis and is now using the tactics of a patent troll to attempt to extort money from Apple by applying a royalty rate to Apple’s own inventions they had nothing to do with,” Josh Rosenstock of Apple said in a statement, as per NDTV.
Meanwhile, Nokia will be filing more lawsuits in other jurisdictions. Stay tuned for more updates!
