WatchGuard Technologies has announced that the largest concern on cyber security for 2017 is ransomware, a type of malware that blocks access to a computer system until a ransom is paid. The provider of advanced network security solutions revealed that the increasing threat of ransomware will affect businesses this year.
Research firm Vanson Bourne has conducted a survey to provide a further understanding of the firewall market. The results show that 83 percent of the 1,400 WatchGuard partner organisations involved in the study believe that many customers will be affected by ransomware this year.
The resellers believe that majority of their customers are willing to pay a cyber ransom which would encourage cyber criminals to continue the act. If not prevented, the security threat will greatly affect businesses.
Unfortunately, not all businesses have enough knowledge and resources to address security alerts that could compromise corporate information systems. WatchGuard Chief Technology Officer, Corey Nachreiner that threat will really be serious this year.
“The proliferation of ransomware reached epidemic proportions in 2016, so it makes sense that resellers are forecasting it as the top threat next year. On top of cyber extortion, security customers are hearing about tons of other new attacks and threat vectors each day, and they’re wondering how best to protect themselves,” Nachreiner stated.
She added that proper guidance should be provided to resellers of network security solutions and to their customers. Knowing both the threat and the solution to it is equally important.
