Twitter Will Release New Features To Control Harassment

Twitter will be implementing some changes to make the social media site safer for users. The company is going to address the increasing incidents of harassment on the platform.

Ed Ho, vice president of engineering at Twitter has posted a series of tweets informing everyone about their plans. The social networking service admits that it has done little to prevent harassment but this year, the company will be more dedicated to listening to its users.

In the coming days, Twitter is expected to roll out fixes that will prevent offenders from creating new accounts. This will stop wrongdoers from harassing more people. New features will also be released this year for the protection of the users.

Ho said that they will now focus on improving user interaction. He tweeted, “Making Twitter a safer place is our primary focus and we are now moving with more urgency than ever.”

Engaging in conversations is allowed on Twitter but the constant abuse discourages many from participating in discussions. Harassment brings fear to many users but it is about to end.

“We’re approaching safety with a sense of urgency. As such, we will be rolling out a number of product changes in the coming days and weeks – some will be immediately visible, while others will be more targeted to specific scenarios. We will update you along the way and continue to test, learn and iterate on these changes to evaluate their effectiveness. You can expect to see meaningful progress in this area,” a spokesperson informed VentureBeat.

Facebook Helps Users Identify ‘Fake News’ And ‘Hoaxes’

December 19, 2016 by Nica De Leon Leave a Comment

Facebook is now making a move to stop fake news from spreading. The largest social networking site will be partnering with fact-checkers and news organisations to help its more than one billion users identify which stories are just made up.

Users will be given options to flag posts that are annoying, inappropriate, spam and fake news stories. Facebook will seek the assistance of ABC News, The Associated Press, FactCheck.org, Snopes and Politifact to realise its new goal. These organisations will sort news flagged by the users.

The easy distribution of false news and hoaxes has put many people in trouble. With Facebook’s new solution, people will know if the reports are disputed by the fact-checkers.

“We do believe that we have an obligation to combat the spread of fake news,” John Hegeman, the vice president of product management on news feed stated in an interview, as per Lex18.

Facebook has clarified that it will not take the role of labelling which reports are true or false. The company will still allow its users to express their opinions of the social media platform.

Those who post fake news will face serious consequences. They will be pushed down the news feed and will not be given the chance to use some of Facebook’s services such as paid promotion.

Meanwhile, some experts have concerns regarding the solution of the networking site. Some voices might be silenced which violates freedom of expression. Opposing parties, for example, only need to flag each other’s posts and encourage a number users to do the same to prevent messages from being heard.
